Appreciating the Greatness of God’s Love
~ Wednesday Week 2 of Easter ~
Acts 5:27-33; Ps 33:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.’ (John 3:16)
Today’s Gospel reminds us of the immensity of God’s love for each one of us. This popular biblical text is the simplest expression that epitomises all of the Gospel, all of the faith, all of theology: God loves us with a free and boundless love. Without a personal appreciation of God’s boundless love, our faith is futile, and our lives are sterile and empty, without purpose.
Knowing that we would often ignore, doubt and deny this great love because its greatness is beyond our experience, God showed definitely in Christ, the breadth, depth and richness of this love, by surrendering his only Son to death on the Cross, which has become our tree of life. God’s love is a merciful love. Mercy and forgiveness are the deepest expressions of love, showing a willingness to give everything for those whom we love, regardless of the personal cost.
‘The Cross of Christ is the supreme proof of the mercy and love that God has for us: Jesus loved us “to the end” (Jn 13:1), meaning not only to the last instant of his earthly life, but to the farthest limit of love. In creation God gives us proof of his immense love by giving us life. In the passion and death of his Son He gave us the proof of proofs: He came to suffer and die for us. So great is God’s mercy: He loves us, He forgives us; God forgives all and God forgives always.’ (Pope Francis Angelus address 15.03.2015)
May Mary, Mother of Mercy, place in our hearts the certitude that we are loved by God. Take a moment to thank God for his great love for you.
