Seasons and Feasts for Kids

One of the richest ways the Church passes on the faith is through the gradual, ongoing formation that happens through the rhythm of Christian life. As we enter into the seasons and feasts of the Church, we don’t simply hear the story of God as something from the past. Rather, we are invited to live that story so that it becomes our story here and now. As Pope Leo says,

“The liturgical year is not a static representation of past events, but an encounter with Christ himself, who desires to immerse his people in the mysteries of salvation history”

This is especially rich for those who hope to pass the faith on to their children, grandchildren, students and younger church community. When we engage children in this rhythm, from one Easter to the next, we create opportunities for them to live within the story of God. This forms children in the faith, builds their sense of belonging and identity, ignites their spiritual memory and imagination, teaches them to pray and provides repeated opportunities for them to encounter Christ Jesus as they grow. It shows them that God is present and active in every season of their lives and in the world around them.

We know that children are especially receptive to this. They love the colours, actions, prayers, and traditions of the Church. They love being part of something bigger than themselves and growing into their own contribution to these celebrations over time. We also know that parents have the most significant impact on a child’s faith formation. When these seasons are observed in the home, they become especially formative for children. Drawing families into the rhythm of the liturgical year provides parents with opportunities to be the first educators of their children in the faith in ways that are accessible and achievable.
