Sound tree, good fruit. Rotten tree, bad fruit.

Wednesday Week 12 in Ordinary Time

Gen 15:1-12, 17-18; Ps 104:1-4, 6-9; Mt 7:15-20

‘Thus you will know them by their fruits.’ (Matthew 7:20)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns us about false prophets, urging discernment by examining the ‘fruits’ of their actions. It’s a reminder that outward appearances can be deceiving. This passage teaches us to look beyond words and observe actions, as they reveal true character. In our daily lives, this means paying attention to how people behave rather than what they claim. Actions rooted in kindness, integrity, and consistency reflect genuine intentions.

This teaching encourages some personal introspection. We can assess our own ‘fruits’ to ensure there is alignment between our values and actions. Are we authentically living our Catholic faith, or is there a disparity between our words and deeds? This self-awareness cultivates personal growth and integrity. Practically, we can apply this discernment to our relationships and life decisions. When selecting a partner, a business collaboration, or even evaluating news sources, we can use this principle to filter sincerity from deception.

Fostering environments where positive actions are valued over empty promises can transform communities. Encouraging practical demonstrations of honesty and compassion nurtures trust. Through mindful observation, we cultivate a society that values authenticity over superficiality.

Jesus is encouraging us to pursue truth, both within ourselves and in others, fostering deeper, more meaningful connections grounded in reality rather than illusion.

So, what kind of fruit are we producing?
