Take courage!
Tuesday Week 18 in Ordinary time
Num 12:1-13; Ps 50:3-7, 12-13; Mt 14:22-36
‘Take heart, it is I!’ (Matthew 14:27)
Ah Peter! Here he goes again from the heights to the depths in one moment, sinking and receiving a gentle rebuke from Jesus. Isn’t this yet another moment in Peter’s life that he probably would like to forget?! Let’s face it, there were a few.
But, instead, let’s step back and look at the whole scene. Yes, Peter is sinking in the water rather than walking on it, but where is everyone else? They are still in the boat! They were all battling the storm together. They were all frightened. They all saw Him walking on the water and heard Him telling them not to be afraid. But Peter alone responded to the call to courage. He alone was bold enough to ask if he could come to Jesus. He alone faced his fear and got out of the boat and actually WALKED ON THE WATER! Even if it was for only a few steps, for one moment, he was walking on the water just as Jesus was!
That’s amazing! I can imagine for the rest of Peter’s life when others might have said ‘Remember when you got out of the boat and sank?’ I think Peter might have replied ‘Well, I remember the day that I found a moment of courage and walked on the water!’
I would rather have a moment of courage that leads to a miraculous encounter with the water walking Saviour, than to be one who stays safely in the boat and watches from afar.
Jesus, give me the courage to boldly step out where others fear to go!
