God Among Us
~ Seventh Day in the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord ~
‘The life was light of all people.’ (John 1:4)
‘The Word became flesh and lived among us.’ (John 1:14) John portrays Jesus as the Word who came to bring life and light to all who are willing to receive it. The light that is promised through the coming of Jesus into our world, still guides our steps and this Life continues to permeate our existence with a sense of purpose and direction.
John states that in the beginning of all things, the Word was with God, co-existed with God. Before order was brought out of chaos, the Word was with God. Before light emerged out of darkness, the Word was with God. Before the first breath exhaled through human nostrils, the Word was with God. The Word was, is, and always will be in sync with God.
In the incarnation, the God of the universe, has lovingly chosen to relate to us in a personal way and to communicate with us in a language we can understand.….
Eugene Petersen, a Presbyterian pastor writes the ‘Word became flesh and moved into the neighbourhood.’ God has chosen to be with us in our humanity. What greater affirmation could we have, than God becoming one with us and showing us the way to live.
As we follow the teachings and example of Jesus, we learn how to live our humanity into fullness. We have the perfect role model in the person of Jesus. Imagine how we would live if we believed our neighbour was indeed the beloved of God. Our neighbourhoods would be places of welcome, compassion and peace. We are invited by this incarnational God to be signs of light and life wherever we are.
Today, let our mantra be: ‘Let me create a welcoming space for all who come my way.’
