A Divine Invitation

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Is 66:18-21; Ps 116; Heb 12:5-7, 11-13; Lk 13:22-30

‘He said to them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.’ (Luke 13:24)

For a butterfly to emerge safely from its chrysalis, it must struggle through a small crack. This struggle is key to the development of the strength of its wings and hence its ability to enjoy the freedom of flight and life. So, it may be with us. Jesus is advising His followers advice to enter through the narrow gate in response to the question of who will be saved.

God desires all to be saved (1Tim 2:4). But sadly, this is not what everyone desires. Many prefer to follow their own will and build their own kingdom rather than discerning God’s will and contribute to build His Kingdom. Through His redemptive love, Jesus is the focal point of humanity. Jesus offers His followers a divine invitation to pass through the narrow gate to enter God’s kingdom.

The refinement of a person’s character and will are often enhanced by life’s challenges. A cosy and comfortable life may not produce the same awareness, resilience and determination as an environment that requires the development of life skills and strength of spirit to survive and thrive. Carrying the excess personal baggage of achievements and ambitions may prove costly if we cannot fit through the narrow gate. Jesus warns us to remove what encumbers us by reducing our self-centred demands and worldly ambitions, to create space to receive the Lord, who is in fact, our gate to Paradise. May the grace of His divine invitation awaken our desire to live more fully in Him.
