What is your new wine?

Saturday Week 13 in Ordinary Time

Gen 27:1-5, 15-29; Ps 134:1-6; Mt 9:14-17

‘Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.’ (Matthew 9:17)

The first thing that comes to mind when I read this scripture is a quote often attributed to Albert Einstein – “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” I think that is exactly what Jesus is saying in today’s Gospel.

I really need to listen to this piece of wisdom! Whether it be something simple like taking that road home from work when I know that it will be congested, or trying to start that old healthy eating plan that I have tried to start every Monday morning since forever, or repeating those often-made mistakes in difficult relationships, the result is the same. I get exactly what I got last time! I find myself asking “Why did I do that again?!” Either I am eternally optimistic, or I am just choosing the easier path…

New things can be hard – pushing us out of our comfort zone – requiring a step of faith. And this can be scary, and I get the choice to take the path of least resistance and lean into the known. But another part of me, the quieter, convicted part of me, wants more than that. I want freedom in that difficult relationship. I want a healthy body. And I absolutely don’t want to be stuck in traffic every day at the same place on the way home from work. If I really want new wine – then it is time for new wineskins!

So, what is your new wine? Where is Jesus stretching you? Ask Him to show you the new wineskin so the fresh wine can be poured out.
