Luke 9:46-50

NRSV
An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.’ John answered, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.’

Greatness in Humility

"The least among all of you is the greatest." (Luke 9:48)

This Gospel reveals how different Jesus’ vision of greatness is from the world’s understanding. While the disciples are occupied with status and importance, Jesus turns their attention to a little child. In doing so, he teaches that true greatness is not found in power, recognition, or authority, but in humility, openness, and love. The child becomes a living sign of the kind of heart that belongs in the kingdom of God.

By placing the child beside him, Jesus shows that welcoming the small, the weak, and the overlooked is the same as welcoming him. This teaching challenges believers to examine what they value most. Human beings often seek to be noticed, admired, or placed above others. Yet Jesus makes it clear that greatness in God’s eyes is measured by compassion and simplicity, not by position.

The second part of the Gospel deepens this lesson. When John tries to stop someone casting out demons because he is not part of their group, Jesus responds with surprising generosity. He teaches that God’s work is not limited by human boundaries or personal pride. The disciples are called not to jealousy or exclusion, but to gratitude wherever good is being done in Jesus’ name.

Together, these two moments reveal a consistent message: humility and openness are marks of true discipleship. Those who make room for others, especially the least, and who rejoice in God’s work beyond themselves, are the ones who truly reflect the heart of Christ.

How is Jesus’ vision of ‘greatness’ reflected in your life?
