Holiness and Mission

~ Solemnity St Patrick, bishop ~

Jer 1:4-9; Ps 116; Acts 13:46-49; Lk 10:1-12, 17-20

‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ (Jeremiah 1:5)

Holiness of life and mission are inseparably bound together. As we celebrate the feast of St. Patrick today, scripture highlights how these themes are organically linked. Holiness includes a missionary imperative, and any missionary endeavour is unlikely to be effective unless it is underpinned by an authentic holiness of life.

In the calling narrative of the prophet Jeremiah, we see one who is first ‘consecrated’ (made sacred), then sent as a ‘prophet to the nations.’ Similarly, in the Gospel, the seventy-two disciples are appointed by Christ and sent on mission (Luke 10:1). In commissioning them, Jesus calls them to be holy. Holiness is more than just saying prayers and avoiding sin; it means being ‘set apart’ for God, totally dedicated to his will. The seventy-two are given a distinctive ministry, to be lived with dedication and profound simplicity of life, relying solely on the generosity of others for their needs.

In St. Patrick, we see one who embodied holiness and missionary zeal. His love for those who had once persecuted him and his dedication to spreading the faith among them reflect a faith honed through prayer, penance, and charity.

As Lent deepens our hunger for holiness, let us also strive to exercise a ‘prophetic voice’—like Jeremiah, the seventy-two, and St. Patrick—proclaiming God’s holiness to all who will listen. May this Lenten season help us to hone our faith, so that we may grow in our capacity to live holy lives. May we dedicate ourselves more fully to the will of God and thus be his instruments in drawing others to himself. St. Patrick, pray for us.
