The lesson of the fig tree

Friday, Week 34 in Ordinary Time

‘When you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.’ [Luke 21:31]

We have been going through ‘end times’ readings, a fitting way to close the year as we prepare to welcome Advent on Sunday.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prompts us to observe the signs of the times to prepare for the kingdom of God. The Christmas event of Jesus’ birth is pivotal in bringing the Kingdom of God close to humanity. While today’s reading could be applied to the apocalyptic signs happening all over the globe, it also directs us to reflect on what the year has been for each of us, as we enter the season of Advent.

Through the year that is finishing, have I grown closer to God? Has the kingdom of God grown bigger in my heart? What are the things in my personal life that I should attempt to change to prepare myself for receiving the Kingdom of God anew this Christmas? We experience change every year in our lives as we go through cycles of spiritual growth and face our weaknesses and sin; nonetheless, Jesus loves us for who we are, and that promise does not change, and does not pass away.

May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide us through Advent as we reflect on our shortcomings and embrace change for growth by relying on God’s grace as we celebrate the birth of our Lord at Christmas.
