Getting Lost on Purpose

Solemnity The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Eek 34:11-16; Ps 22:1-6; Rom 5:5-11; Lk 15:3-7

‘Rejoice with me for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ (Luke 15:6)

When we hear this familiar Gospel, we often think about the ‘lost sheep’ being the one that was on the wrong path, separating itself from the ‘Good Shepherd.’ But what if the sheep got lost on purpose? See, it is natural to want to surround yourself with your tribe who share the same values, beliefs, culture, traditions, or world views. It can help you to flourish and help you remain steadfast in your faith.

Sometimes though, you can find yourself in a situation where the group you have surrounded yourself with, your flock as it were, start traveling along the wrong path, further and further away from Jesus. It takes a lot of courage at times like this to break away from the negative influences and redirect your focus back to your relationship with Jesus and the life you are called to live.

Maybe, this Gospel isn’t just about Jesus reassuring you that He will go out of His way to seek you out when you find yourself lost and alone. Maybe it is also about the times when you are brave enough to ‘get lost’ on purpose, to be free from all other distractions so you and Jesus can find each other again. Either way, you can be sure that you will not be lost for long, as Jesus will waste no time searching for you and declaring to all those who can hear, ‘Rejoice with me for I have found my sheep that was lost.’

Today on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, take time to thank Jesus for the extravagant love of the ‘Good Shepherd’ who carries you back to safety and draws you into His rejoicing Heart of Love.
