Matthew 18:1-5, 10

NRSV
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. ‘Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.

Reflection

Reclaiming the child within

"Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." (Matthew 18:5)

I am writing this reflection while attending the Ignite Conference in Brisbane, surrounded by 1,500 young people of all ages. Sitting in the area for children aged 0–3, I am contemplating the beauty and joy that children bring to the world. It is highlighted as I sit here, that children are not afraid to call out to their parents. While adults often shy away from reliance and vulnerability, children naturally express trust and dependence.

The youth present have just experienced Adoration, demonstrating a hunger, freedom, and passion that many adults set aside in their faith journey. Unafraid to demonstrate their devotion, they openly express their love for Jesus, who is truly present in the Eucharist. As adults we are called to reclaim this passion and be like children able to express ourselves with a new passion for Christ in our lives.

In this Scripture passage, Jesus transforms our understanding of greatness and value in the Kingdom of Heaven. Catholic teaching affirms the intrinsic dignity and worth of every child from the moment of conception. Jesus warns against despising “one of these little ones”. This underscores the sacred dignity God bestows upon the vulnerable, the small, and the forgotten. By receiving and protecting the humble and defenceless, we welcome Christ Himself.

Lord, on this memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, may we reclaim childlike trust and joy. Grant us the grace to renounce self-reliance and rest fully in the care of our loving Father. Amen.

How can I be more trusting and joyful? What will I delight in doing today?
