The Greatest Commandments: A Foundation for Life

Memorial The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Ruth 1:1-3, 3-6. 14-16, 22; Ps 145:5-10; Mt 22: 34-40

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind… And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37,39)

In today’s gospel reading, we encounter a familiar pattern of religious leaders attempting to ensnare Jesus. After the Sadducees had failed in their questioning about the resurrection, the Pharisees seized their opportunity. One expert in the law tested Jesus with a seemingly impossible question about which commandment was greatest, hoping to trap him in theological controversy where any answer could be criticised.

Yet Jesus responds with profound wisdom that transforms their trap into truth. He reveals that all life flows from these two loves—loving God completely and loving others as ourselves. This means our spiritual practices, moral choices, and daily decisions should all stem from and serve these twin loves.

On this feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we find in Mary the perfect model of these two great commandments. Her entire life demonstrated complete love for God—from her ‘yes’ at the Annunciation to her faithful presence at the cross. Simultaneously, she embodied love of neighbour through her immediate service to Elizabeth, her compassionate intercession at Cana, and her maternal care for the early Church. Mary shows us that these twin loves are not abstract ideals but lived realities.

These commandments can become our compass when life becomes complicated. In every choice we make, we should ask ourselves: Does this help me love God? Does it help me love others?

Lord Jesus, help us to remember that everything hangs on love—love for you and love for others. When our days become overwhelming with choices and demands, guide our hearts back to these simple yet profound truths. May our decisions imitate the Blessed Virgin Mary by honouring you and serving our neighbours. Amen.
