He also told them a parable: ‘Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. Why do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, “Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye”, when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.

When travelling through unknown and/or dangerous territory, it is common for even the adventurous to engage the service of a guide. Indeed, one who knows the territory and understands the local culture can help the traveller avoid many pitfalls they might not even apprehend. But if the guide cannot be relied upon, would it not be a case of the blind leading the blind (cf. Luke 6:39)?

There are many, especially in our world of social media and mass communication, who would purport to offer guidance. “Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye” (Luke 6:42), they say – let me show you your error and set you straight. Tread carefully! Likewise, before we offer our own ‘sage’ advice, should we not be truly cognisant of the “log” (Luke 6:41) in our own eye?

Jesus is the one who truly sees. As he tells us elsewhere, “I am the Way; I am the Truth and the Life…” (John 14:6), and also invites us to take up our cross daily and follow him (cf. Luke 9:23). If we point others to him, we do them a good turn – but let us do so with humility. Likewise, if we pick up the Scripture and read it in the power of the Spirit, if we listen carefully to his teaching as faithfully handed on by the Church, then we can traverse the rocky terrain of life with confidence. Lastly, let our prayer be always that of the blind man Jesus healed — “Lord, let me see again.” (Luke 18:41).
