Sitting in the Mystery
~ Saturday before Epiphany ~
‘Come and see.’ (John 1:39)
The Gospel today opens us to the call of ministry. The first followers of Jesus are called. Their interest is peaked after hearing John exclaim ‘Look here is the Lamb of God.’ What made them follow Jesus we don’t know but follow they did. As they followed Jesus he turned and asked them directly ‘What are you looking for?’
We are told the two men spent the day with Jesus, walking, listening and watching. Something in his manner, his teaching, his presence captured their interest. They were intrigued by him. So much so, that Andrew sought out his brother and said he have found the Messiah.
The depth of feeling and understanding that Andrew experienced came through his searching and his faith. The strength of our faith can lead us in deepening our relationship with Jesus. The ultimate goal of our faith is to lead us ever more deeply into the loving embrace of God.
Take time today to turn this question to a personal question and ask ourselves: ‘What am I looking for this day as a follower of Jesus?’ Our answers will be varied and numerous. So, what am I looking for? What am I asking of Jesus? What is Jesus asking of me? Serious questions for any who espouses to be in relationship with Jesus. Take time today and sit with these questions.
Let our mantra today be: ‘Help me grow ever more deeply into your mystery.’
