Do not let your hearts be troubled

~ Friday Week 4 of Easter ~

Acts 13:26-33; Ps 2:6-11; Jn 14:1-6

‘I am the way, and the truth and the life.’ (John 14: 6)

I find it helpful when I am reading or reflecting on the scriptures to imagine myself present in the actual scene portrayed, in this case, the Last Supper in the upper room. Jesus is with his apostles. The ferment and tension in Jerusalem is palpable, like waiting for a cyclone to hit. Jesus tells his followers some worrying things: that someone would betray him and that Peter would deny him. No wonder, Thomas and the others were concerned. I would be too!

Despite this bad news and his impeding arrest, torture, death and burial, Jesus says to those present: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled.’ In today’s world where it is so easy to be overwhelmed by the current uncertainties, Jesus’ words are just as applicable to us. He gives us no road map or Sat Nav directions about what to do or where to go. Instead, he proclaims himself as the way, and the truth and the life.

May we take heart from these gospel words to follow The Way of Jesus, the Son of God, in every day of our lives. There is an old hymn that says: ‘Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace.’

May we see Jesus’ face glow in every day of our lives, in all circumstances.
