Nurture what You have Received

"Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain; growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixth and a hundredfold." (Mark 4:8)

Today’s Gospel, the Parable of the Sower, is a profound text that invites us to reflect on the nature of faith and the different ways people receive God’s word. In this story, Jesus describes a sower scattering seed on various types of ground—along the path, on rocky places, among thorns, and on good soil. Each type of soil represents a different response to God’s message, ranging from those who are unreceptive, to those whose initial enthusiasm is choked by life’s worries, to those who embrace the word and bear fruit.
What stands out to me is the reminder that faith is not just a one-off decision but an ongoing journey shaped by how we nurture what we receive. It’s easy to get caught up in daily distractions or to let hardships erode our trust. The thorns of anxiety, the rocks of shallow commitment, or the hard path of indifference are all challenges I can recognise in my own life. Yet, the promise is there for those who persevere—the potential for abundant growth and impact.
This parable encourages me to examine the condition of my own heart. Am I making space for God’s word to take root, or am I letting busyness and worry crowd it out? It’s also a call to patience; growth takes time and often happens quietly, beneath the surface. Ultimately, Jesus’ words offer hope: no matter the current state of our ‘soil’, change is possible if we keep turning towards Him, cultivating openness and readiness to grow.
