Trusting in the God of the Impossible
Memorial Sts Martha, Mary and Lazarus
1 Jn 4:7-16; Ps 33:2-11; Jn 11:19-27
‘I am the resurrection and the life.’ (John 11:25)
Today, we listen to Martha. Despite her grief, she expresses unwavering faith in Jesus, declaring, ‘Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.’ Often, during my own low points, I find a direct correlation with my faith; doubts begin to creep in, and previous convictions can weaken. However, Martha’s resolute declaration stands in contrast to this common experience.
Jesus does not let her down. Despite Lazarus having been many days in the tomb Jesus demonstrates that He is the Son of God. Nothing is impossible for God, not even reversing death. Despite this reality, I still struggle even with the small things in my life to hand them over to God and declare my faith in Him.
We see a foreshadowing of the resurrection yet to come and the promise of resurrection and eternal life for each of us. We have a God who is trustworthy and that even when things look dire or over, He can bring new life both physically and spiritually.
Martha is an example to all of us not to be swayed by the feelings we are experiencing but to stand with faith in a God who is able to do the impossible.
Help me to have faith in you God, in all situations. You are the God of the impossible, so help me to trust that I can hand to you, any challenges or problems I am experiencing.
