Searching for Deeds of Power

Memorial St Bonaventure, bishop, doctor

Ex 2:1-15; Ps 68:3,14, 30-31, 33-34; Mt 11:20-24

‘Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done, because they did not repent.’ (Matthew 11:20)

Today is the memorial of St. Bonaventure, a 13th-century Franciscan friar and theologian, known for his profound insights into spirituality and faith. Some of his notable quotes emphasize the importance of humility, the connection between all creatures and God, and the transformative power of prayer. ‘As pride is the beginning of all sin, so humility is the foundation of all virtue. Learn to be really humble and not, as the hypocrite, humble merely in appearance.” (Holiness of Life)

It seems ludicrous to us that the towns where Jesus exercised ‘deeds of power’ did not repent and welcome the ‘good news’ that God’s Kingdom was in their midst. Is it any different today when many people do not see the miracle of God’s Spirit at work in our world? Why did some people recognise God’s power at work in the person of Jesus while others did not? Why is it that today some see ‘deeds of power’ happening and others do not?

True humility, not self-abasement, opens our hearts, minds and spirits to the workings of God in our lives and our world. When we seek the ways and wisdom of God first, then our eyes are receptive to ‘the deeds of power’ occurring around us and our hearts are open to repent and receive God’s forgiveness and healing.

Today, let us search for ‘the deeds of power’ around us and give praise to God for them. It can be as simple as the gift of an unexpected affirmation or as powerful as a heart set free from the bondage of hate, depression or loneliness. Jesus, open my eyes and heart to your ‘deeds of power’ in my life. Amen.
