Remember the Why!
~ Memorial St. Boniface, bishop, martyr ~
Acts 22:30, 23:6-11; Ps 15:1-2, 5, 7-11; Jn 17:20-26
‘So that the world may know’ (John 17:23)
Look, can I be honest? I am not a fan of John’s Gospel. I’m a simple girl and think John could have used a LOT less words to convey his message. I often find myself shaking my head trying to make sense of what he is saying. But today, in the midst of all the words, I think I heard a new invitation – to unity and to community – to be one with the Lord, and each other.
I am really drawn to the call to be one with Jesus – that’s the deepest desire of my heart. But I am very challenged by the call to be one with others. Because sometimes, just like John’s Gospel, I find people hard. I find relationships challenging. I sometimes find the sacrifice and surrender of self for the good of the other exhausting. And, if I am being honest, sometimes I would rather not press in when relationships get difficult.
But what helps me is to remember the ‘why’ and today’s Gospel reminds us of that. Why are we called to be one with the Lord and one with others? So that our witness of unity, even when it is hard, especially when it is hard, will point to Jesus! So, brothers and sisters, let’s listen to the many words of John encouraging us to be one with the Lord and with each other. And let’s press in. So that the world may know that there is a love beyond anything we can even imagine. So that the world will know that there is light and hope and promise in every day!
