Matthew 7:21,24‐27

NRSV

‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord”, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’

What Kind of House?

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock." (Matthew 7:24)

Today’s scriptures invite us to pause and examine the foundations of our lives, not just what we believe but how we live. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us it is not enough to cry, “Lord, Lord.” Discipleship and faith are not measured by words alone. They are measured by the shape of our lives, the integrity of our choices and the way we listen to his Word and live it out in love.

Faith is like building a house on rock, day by day, choice by choice and prayer by prayer, on the solid ground of Christ. It’s about letting his voice be the deepest voice that shapes us. What we build our lives on will sustain or shake us through stillness or storms. It is only a house built on the everlasting rock of Christ that will not fall.

So, we are invited to pause and reflect. What kind of house am I building? What foundation is my life resting on? Am I simply going through the motions, or do I long to go deeper, into truth, compassion, and the presence of Christ himself?

God continuously offers us a gentle, loving, and persistent invitation. Through the Spirit, we are drawn deeper: to become wise builders whose lives rest on the rock of Christ. In stillness and trust, in listening to his Word and walking in his ways, we build not only houses of faith but homes where God’s presence dwells.
