Matthew 11:11-15

NRSV
Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. Let anyone with ears listen!

Humility

"Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he…Let anyone with ears listen!" (Matthew 11:11, 15)

We are invited to learn from John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus, called by Jesus, the greatest born of women. Yet John’s greatness was not rooted in power or status, but in humility and courageous faith.

Even in prison, John’s life continued to witness to his purpose: preparing the way of the Lord. John fulfils Malachi’s prophecy (Malachi 3:1) as the one sent ahead of the Messiah. His life was one of deep humility; he knew his mission was to point others toward Christ.

In John, we see a model for our own discipleship. He reminds us that true greatness in God’s eyes is about humble service and openness to God’s call.

As Isaac of Nineveh, a 7th-century monk, taught, “true humility radiates a peace so deep that even creation senses it, like a quiet fragrance of paradise.” (Homily 71). True humility is earthy and grounded. It does not strive for status and recognition but for belonging rightly to God and neighbour.

Matthew’s gospel challenges us to embrace this humility. The kingdom of God breaks into our world not through status or acclaim but through those willing to surrender pride, let go of control, and walk the path of love. It breaks in through people like John, who lived to make way for Christ.

This Advent, may we learn from John. May we prepare our hearts to become people of peace, humility and courage. May we prepare the way and make room for Christ in the world.
