Sacred Anticipation
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wis 18:6-9; Ps 32:1, 12, 18-20, 22; Heb 11:1-2, 8-19; Lk 12:32-48
‘You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’ Luke 12:40
I have an evening routine that helps me get ready for the following day. I pick out what I’m going to wear; I get my lunch ready; check my calendar; and set my alarm. It prepares me for my plans for the following day, but how am I ready for God’s plans for my day?
The direction from Christ in today’s gospel transforms our daily routines into sacred anticipation. Christ’s presence can breakthrough at any moment, and as those who desire a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus, we ought to be longing for these moments, and ready to recognise them when they are upon us.
So how do we prepare for them? Well, instead of getting our lunch or an outfit ready, we can prepare our hearts and practise the virtues. As well as setting our alarm, lean into the Spirit and ask for a ‘holy nudge’ so we can’t miss these moments with Christ.
+ Lord, we want to be ready for you. Let the lamps of our hearts be illuminated with faith; ready, waiting, and wanting for today’s encounter with you.
