Dealing with conflict .. Jesus’s way
Saturday Week 15 in Ordinary Time
Ex 12:37-42; Ps 135:1, 10-15, 23-24; Mt 12:14-21
‘He will not break a bruised reed’ (Matthew 12:20)
How do we act when confronted with conflict, injustice, and malign resistance?
Today’s Gospel offers a powerful reflection on the mission and character of Jesus amid rising resistance and opposition. In verse 14, we see the Pharisees plotting against Jesus, resisting truth and compassion, and preferring to cling to power and unhealthy tradition. Rather than confronting them directly, Jesus withdraws (v.15), not out of fear, but in alignment with His mission—not to provoke conflict but to fulfill prophecy and bring healing and the reign of God.
Verses 18–21 fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy, revealing Jesus as the chosen servant of God, gentle and just. He does not shout or break the bruised reed—symbols of His compassion for the weak and wounded. This contrasts sharply with the Pharisees’ harsh legalism. Jesus’ style of leadership is not forceful or self-promoting, but humble, patient, and deeply attuned to the needs of the vulnerable.
Reflecting on this passage challenges us to consider how we respond to opposition and injustice. Do we stay true to our mission or fight, flight, or freeze? Do we retaliate, or do we embody Christ’s quiet strength and trust in God’s justice? Are we quick to judge, or are we careful not to ‘break a bruised reed’? Jesus’ character and example calls us to live with compassion and gentleness, and in so doing, becoming vehicles for hope and healing in a broken world. In Him, we read … ‘the nations place their hope’ (v. 21) … and so do we.
Prayer: In my interactions today … Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
