Purpose in the mundane!
~ Monday, Week 3 of Easter ~
Acts 6:8-15; Ps 118:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29
‘Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life’ (John 6:27)
As I was reading this Scripture, one part stood out to me as if it were highlighted in pink neon; when Jesus exhorted the people to ‘not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life’.
My first thought was “Ah man! This is me! I do this all the time!” I scratch around in the dark trying to make the best of what I have, trying to provide all I need for myself and my family, trying so hard to BE all things to all people; and all of this done in my own strength, and without thought of anything other than the task at hand. But when I read the words of Jesus, I was encouraged to raise my eyes above the day-to-day and allow Jesus to help me find purpose in the most mundane of tasks. With Jesus, I can look beyond and see the meaning, and even the eternal impact, of the things I do.
So, I wonder what my life would look like if I only sought after the ‘food that endures for eternal life’ as Jesus encourages us today. What if I was to seek HIM first, HIS will, HIS way as I go about my day? What if I fixed my eyes on Him and trusted that He would provide for all my needs? What if even the most simple, mind-numbing (and dare I say, boring!) day-to-day task could be an act of worship offered to the one who holds eternity in His hands? That sounds like a life of purpose and meaning to me!
