Does our Enthusiasm Wax and Wane?

Monday Week 13 in Ordinary Time

Gen 18:16-33; Ps 104:1-4, 8-11; Mt 8:18-22

‘Teacher, I will follow you, wherever you go.’ (Matthew 8:19)

We can on occasions be caught up in the excitement of the moment and promise to do something that we wouldn’t ordinarily commit to doing. For example, we might attend a charity fundraising dinner and buoyed by the impact of the speakers feel that it would be good to make a regular and substantial financial donation to support this cause. In the days following we might reconsider and think that this was a rash decision made and while a noble cause worthy of our support, is not sustainable.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus chastens a scribe who promises to follow him ‘wherever you go’ by citing that being a disciple will mean not having a home, nor any certainty about where they will sleep. Even more startling is Jesus’ request that a would-be follower leave the burial of his father to others and come follow him at once. Being a follower of Jesus is a big ask. It means giving up many things and giving priority to the ways of God. Yes, Jesus promises that his disciples will receive a hundredfold for their service, but there will be a huge cost.

My enthusiasm for following Jesus waxes and wanes, especially when the demands of life overtake my desire to be a faithful disciple. Sometimes, it feels that Jesus asks too much. Do I really have to forgive my work colleague who has just sabotaged my project? Do I have to love my child even though they have told me to my face that they hate me? Do I have to care for an ageing parent who refuses my help?

Jesus, help me to be faithful to You, especially in the tough times, when I want to walk away and choose the easy path. Give me strength, courage, and generosity to persevere. Amen.
