Standing Strong Within Yourself
~ Monday, Week 3 in Ordinary Time ~
‘If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.’ (Mark 3:24)
It is said that we are most influenced by the five people we spend the most time with. We don’t always have a lot of choice when it comes to the groups of people we mix with; be it family, faith community members, work colleagues and so on. However, we can choose who ‘our people’ are, those in whom we intentionally put our time and energy into. So why should we be discerning about which relationships we invest in?
Jesus reminds us, ‘If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.’ This means that being a follower of Christ is an ‘all or nothing’ kind of deal. We all sin and get lost sometimes, that is part of being human, and Jesus reminds us that sin can be forgiven. Today’s text tells us that we can’t live for Christ on some days, in some contexts, around some people, and then turn it off like a switch at other times. If we are divided in this way, we cannot stand strong in ourselves and strong in our faith.
We need to surround ourselves with those who influence our hearts, minds and actions in ways that helps us be active in the building of the kingdom of God rather than being with those who seek to tear it down. We need to choose. Be with people who share our values and faith and stand with us or allow those whose influence causes us to comprise our integrity and beliefs to lead us astray.
Take a moment to name and give thanks for the people in your life that help build the kingdom of God alongside you and help you stand strong in your faith.
