Today’s Scripture Readings
Luke 8:16‐18
‘No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light.
Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.’

When Gifts Are Shared, God’s Light Is Revealed
‘No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar … but puts it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.’ (Luke 8:16)
In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds us that no one lights a lamp to hide it away. The light is meant to be seen, to guide, and to give hope. Each of us carries a unique light, a grace entrusted to us by God. Some graces shine in teaching or building, others in compassion, generosity, or prayer. None of these gifts are meant to be buried—they are meant to enhance and give purpose to our lives and to serve God’s plan for the world.
The reading from Ezra shows this truth in action. When the exiles returned to Jerusalem, not all could rebuild the Temple with their hands, but each offered what they could. Some gave silver, gold, and cattle; others gave their labour and skill. Each gift was different. Together they created the dwelling place of God. Their variety of offerings became one act of faith in sharing and serving.
The psalmist celebrates this same reality: ‘The Lord has done marvels for us.’ (Psalm 126:3) The marvel is not only in the restoration of a nation but in the way, God works through human hearts stirred to respond. The lamp that is placed on a stand, the temple raised from ruins, the faithful song of gratitude—all point to the God who entrusts us with light and calls us to let it shine.
Lord, you stir our hearts with many gifts and graces. Teach us to recognise and trust your plan, to use what we have been given, and to rejoice in the light of others. May our lives, joined together, become a dwelling place for your presence. Amen.
