A Commission

‘Do you love me’ (John 21:15)
As humans when we start something we are usually enthusiastic, excited, and rearing to get on with it. Over time, some of this enthusiasm subsides. It can even turn into boredom. Jesus quietly asks Peter, his very human follower of many years, ‘Do you love me?’ not once, but three times. And each time Peter responds ‘Yes.’ Then Jesus leads Peter into an understanding that professing his love comes with responsibility. There will be challenges and difficult situations that come with being a loving follower of Jesus’ way of life. Peter doesn’t flinch. His Yes is still strong.
This same question is asked of us each day. ‘Do you love me?’ What is my response? It is a simple question really. We know we are loved by God, and we have not had to do anything to earn this love. All we have to do is be open to receive this lavish gift. Being baptised as children we are often unaware that we are being invited into the mission of God on this Earth. Thomas O’ Meara, O.P., wrote our baptism is ‘a commission not an insurance.’ Our baptism calls us into an intimate relationship with Christ. With this invitation comes a responsibility to follow the leadership of Jesus in being compassionate, loving and people of justice. The following may not always be easy.
So today as we hear this question ‘Do you love me?’ may our response be a whole-hearted Yes.
