Healing for the Unseen Wounds of Our Heart

~ Friday of Christmas Time ~

Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.”  Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.  (Luke 5:12-13)

There is so much we can learn about the unnamed man in today’s gospel simply from knowing he had leprosy. Leprosy wasn’t just a physical health issue—a highly contagious skin disease—it was also a social one. Leviticus chapters 13 and 14 outline the laws surrounding leprosy, including the cleansing rituals and sacrifices of atonement required. Those suffering from leprosy were forced to isolate themselves, forbidden from touching others or sharing items.

Everyone could see this man’s visible affliction, but what was hidden was the deep isolation and loneliness he likely endured. Yet Jesus sees it all. As Hebrews 4:13 reminds us, “no creature is hidden but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.” In that moment, Christ’s touch didn’t just heal the man’s skin disease—it restored so much more, bringing healing to his whole being.

Many of us carry visible afflictions we long for Christ to heal, but all of us have unseen wounds too. Nothing is hidden from His sight, and nothing is beyond His healing touch.

+Jesus, You see all things and know me completely. Bring Your gentle healing to the unseen wounds of my heart and soul this day. Amen.
