Transforming doubt to faith

Feast St Thomas, apostle

Eph 2:19-22; Ps 116; John 20:24-29

‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails, and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ (John 20:25)

Ah, my old friend Thomas. The disciple who so publicly had a crisis of faith that reassures me that I am not alone when faith isn’t easy.

How easy it is for doubt to creep into our own lives, as it did with Thomas, especially in challenging times. Like Thomas, I have moments of uncertainty, particularly when belief feels like a difficult choice.

The beauty of this Gospel lies in Jesus’ response to Thomas. Jesus did not scold him for his doubts, or indicate in any way disapproval or judgement, but lovingly invited him to touch His wounds and believe.

Thomas’ doubt was transformed into faith when he encountered the risen Christ.

A reminder for us today is that when doubt arises, we can turn to Jesus with our questions and uncertainties. We can bring our doubts to Him in prayer, seeking His guidance and understanding. Just as Jesus met Thomas where he was, He meets us in our doubts and invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. If we seek Him, there is an opportunity to transform our doubt into faith.

Today, let us consider how we can bring our doubts to Jesus.

+ Jesus, in moments of doubt and uncertainty, I turn to you. Help me to trust in your presence, knowing you are always with me.
