Our call to humility and service
~ Tuesday, Week 7 of Ordinary Time ~
Sir 2:1-11; Ps 36:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40; Mk 9:30-37
‘Whoever who wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.’ (Mark 9:35)
Today’s Gospel includes Jesus’ second passion prediction where he foretells his betrayal, death, and resurrection. The disciples’ misunderstanding and their fear to ask for clarification highlight their struggle to grasp Jesus’ true mission. Jesus uses this moment to teach about true greatness, emphasising that the first must be last and servant of all.
Jesus illustrates the importance of humility and service by placing a child among the disciples. In ancient culture, children were seen as lowly and powerless. By embracing a child, Jesus teaches that receiving the humble and powerless is like receiving him and, by extension, God the Father. This act underscores the value of humility and the call to serve others selflessly.
Similarly, Pope Francis, in his letter to the Bishop of the United States of America, echoes this call to humility and service. He addresses pressing issues such as migration, human dignity, and the Church’s stance on mass deportations. He stresses the inherent dignity of every human person, irrespective of their immigration status, and calls for a compassionate approach that recognises the struggles and aspirations of migrants.
Today’s Gospel and Pope Francis’s letter together form a compelling directive for all of us these days: to serve humbly and advocate for the marginalised. By integrating these teachings into our everyday actions, we can foster a more compassionate and just society.
