Let your ego wither

~ Wednesday, Week 2 in Ordinary Time ~

‘grieved at their hardness of heart’ (Mark 3:5)

The story of Jesus healing the man with the withered hand reveals a powerful tension between Jesus’ mission of compassion and the Pharisees’ rigid adherence to tradition. The Pharisees were threatened by Jesus, not just because of His authority but because He challenged their understanding of what it meant to live faithfully under God’s law. Their fear stemmed from a perceived threat to their way of life, a way rooted in control and tradition rather than in love and service.

Jesus, however, acted boldly, undeterred by their opposition although grieved at ‘the hardness of their hearts’. His frustration with their inability to see beyond their own narrow vision reminds us of our own struggles with change. How often are we so fixed in our ways that we fail to see God’s hand at work around us? Like the Pharisees, we can become trapped in our own understanding, blind to the ways God calls us to step beyond our comfort zones.

The healing of the man’s hand is a profound metaphor for spiritual renewal. Jesus calls us to stretch out our withered hearts and minds, trusting that His grace can restore and transform us. Yet, doing so requires humility —the willingness to let go of our egos and the paths we stubbornly cling to, even when they lead us into the wilderness of self-destruction.

Let us pray that we may we have the courage to set aside our fears, trust in His wisdom, and allow His grace to renew us, leading us from hardness of heart to fullness of life in Him.
