New wine, fresh skins

~ Monday, Week 2 in Ordinary Time ~

‘And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine will be lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.’ (Mark 2:22)

Imagine being so focused on rules that you miss the heart of what’s happening right in front of you. The Pharisees and John’s disciples questioned Jesus’ approach: why weren’t His disciples fasting? But Jesus flips the question, pointing out the reason for celebration: the bridegroom, Jesus Himself, is right here. His presence marks a time of joy, renewal, and abundance, like a wedding feast. Fasting was no longer fitting in this moment. Jesus wasn’t just patching up old traditions; He was bringing something radically new. The new wine of His teaching couldn’t fit into the old wineskins of rigid rules and practices. How often do we cling to familiar ways that might no longer serve us or continue to do some things just because that is how it has always been done, without even knowing the reason?

Faith is not about ticking boxes or following rules for their own sake or appearances. Faith is about transformation, love, and living in harmony and relationship with the Kingdom of God. In a world that often measures success by outward actions, Jesus calls us to look inward at the heart.

For all of us navigating a complex modern world, this passage is a reminder to seek joy in the presence of God and embrace the newness of His Kingdom. Faith isn’t meant to be a burden, or something on our ‘to do’ list; but a life-giving relationship, one that challenges us to let go of what no longer fits and embrace what God is doing here and now.  As we venture into this Jubilee year as pilgrims of hope, let’s open ourselves to the joy and potential of new wine in fresh skins in each of our hearts.
