Set our Hearts Aflame

~ Friday before Epiphany ~

‘And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’ (John 1:34)

The readings today are so affirming and inspiring. We are encouraged to stay strong and to hold onto our belief in the compassionate love of God with all our being. The opening prayer of today’s liturgy invites us to pray:

‘Cast your kindly light upon your faithful, God, we pray, and with the splendour of your glory set their hearts ever aflame.’

John the Baptist’s heart was set aflame with the splendour of God’s glory, and we are asked to believe that our hearts too can be set aflame and that they may never cease to acknowledge and hold fast to God.

The Holy Spirit enlightened the heart and mind of John to see the glory of God revealed in Jesus. John’s deep faith was grounded firmly in his Jewish tradition. His self-emptying allowed his heart to be open to the intense experience of the message of God. He knew who Jesus was and he was willing to be secondary to the mission of Jesus.

Faith is a strong companion in our living. We need to nurture it, protect it and challenge it. We cannot be complacent. Faith neglected, shrinks and dies. The example of John’s faith is a wonderful example for us to follow. He prayed, he questioned, he preached. All the time directing others to the One who was to follow.

Today’s first reading reminds us ‘we are God’s children now.’ (1 John 3:2) John knew he was loved and lived his life with conviction and purpose. John is a wonderful model for us to emulate as we live our lives as disciples of Jesus.

Let our mantra today be: ‘Open my eyes to the splendour of God’s glory in small things.’
