The Way is a Person
"I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
As I read through today’s gospel, I imagine what it would have been like for the disciples to have had this dialogue with Jesus.
In the text itself, we see both Thomas and Philip interacting with Jesus, and Thomas’ earnest question: “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” This question leads us to one of the most quoted lines of John’s gospel – Jesus’ response that he is “the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
So, here we have a clear path of the way to eternal life. A way to enter into the divine relationship of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This way is not a map, or a set of rules or instructions to follow, but rather, it is through a relationship with a person. The person of Jesus Christ.
Christ is seeking to meet each one of us in our own lives, right now. God is the activator of this relationship, and it is our role to become aware of and receive God’s invitation, and simply say ‘yes’ to the grace that is being offered.
The risen Jesus is alive in us now, and is still the way that we can have confidence of entering into the heavenly banquet, to eternal life.
Spend some time in prayer today saying ‘yes’ to Jesus, who wants to love you and meet you exactly where you are in your life today.
