Called to be Salt and Light
"Let your light shine before others!" (Matthew 5:16)
This passage describes how we as Christians are to be in the world – how we are to impact those around us, and how we are to follow Him. We are called to BE the salt and the light – what does this mean? How can we be salt and light today?
The first thing I notice in this passage is that neither salt nor light exist for themselves. Salt only impacts when it is added to food, and light only matters when it shines out. This means that our faith is also not just for ourselves! We are called to share it and not keep it private or locked away. Our lives are meant to make a difference – as salt flavours food, and light drives back the darkness.
We can get caught up in worrying that we don’t know how to share our faith, “I’m not an evangelist, I don’t know how to talk about faith!” and I get that. I work in full time ministry and still find myself lost for words even with my family! But more than being able to SAY the right words, what if we focused on LIVING the good news? What if we centred on how we can be Jesus in the world today – how can we live out His teachings by bringing compassion, joy, hope and love into a world that so desperately needs it? That’s all He asks. Anyone can do that – I can do that – you can do that. Actions do really speak louder than words.
So, how can you be salt and light for someone today?
