A Light That Seeks and Transforms
"For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light." (Mark 4:22)
Today’s Gospel begins by talking about the light from a lamp, only to end up talking about things being given to some and things taken away from others, which can be difficult to understand at first. Once you realise that the light from the lamp is the Light of Christ, there is something beautifully intimate, comforting and healing in Jesus’ words.
In the days of Jesus, lamps would be placed high to ensure that all dark corners of the room would be illuminated. “For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light.” Allowing the light of Christ to radiate within us, to allow all that was once hidden or secret to bask in the warmth and glow of the Light of the World means allowing all that we consider dark within ourselves, all that we try to hide away, to be bathed in the grace, hope and love of the Risen Christ.
This light doesn’t simply seep in, it heals. It doesn’t simply shine where a crack allows, it seeks out and transforms the darkness. This is why Jesus says: ‘For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’ (Mark 4:25) For those who allow the Light of Christ to radiate within, the brighter and more far reaching the light will be. For those who do not, it is the darkness that will radiate.
Take a moment to notice all the places within you that the Light of Christ embraces, offering a prayer of gratitude for His transforming grace, hope and love.
