Matthew 11:16-19

NRSV
‘But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.” For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.’

Wisdom in the Waiting

"Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds." (Matthew 11:19)

In today’s gospel, Jesus laments the people’s resistance and how they criticise John the Baptist and himself. No matter what God offers, either John’s austerity or Jesus’ joy, the people remain closed. Yet Jesus speaks with this hopeful truth: “wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

God’s wisdom is measured by the fruit it bears. It is revealed in lives transformed, in love made visible, in mercy extended. But how easily we can miss this wisdom amid life’s noise.

Henri Nouwen, a priest and theologian, observed that our lives often seem like over-packed suitcases, crammed with obligations and noise. “We simply go along with the many ‘musts’ and ‘oughts’ that have been handed on to us… constantly urged to do more, achieve more, and be more” (Making All Things New).

In our constant activity, we risk missing the quiet wisdom and presence of God at work around us and within us. We can become so focused on what must be done that we fail to notice the grace unfolding in ordinary moments, like the kindness of a stranger, the beauty of creation, and the still, small voice speaking to our hearts.

God’s wisdom is not always loud or dramatic. It often comes in whispers, the silence of prayer, the peace that comes without explanation, and the quiet resilience of love. But to notice it, we must be willing to pause, to create space in the clutter of our minds and hearts. Without this space, we risk rushing past the very presence of God, who longs to meet us in each moment.

Advent is an invitation to pause, to make space. In the holy stillness, God’s wisdom speaks in presence and communion.
