Matthew 3:1‐12

NRSV

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’ This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.”
4Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

‘I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

Reflection

In the Wilderness

"Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." (Matthew 3:3)

Today’s readings urge us to reflect honestly: What paths in our hearts need to be made straight to truly prepare for the coming of the Lord? Here, we hear the voice of John the Baptist bursting through. It’s a voice that cannot be ignored. “Repent,” he cries, with urgency and love. John’s call demands our attention, for it is a call to change. And change begins with turning our hearts. Turning from whatever hinders love, turning toward the one who gives life.

John preaches in the wilderness, the same wilderness where God’s people wandered, where prophets waited and where Jesus would be tempted. In scripture, the wilderness is more than a physical location; it is a place of encounter. It is where we are stripped of distraction and comforts and brought face-to-face with our deeper selves. Often, our own hearts can feel like a wilderness, where they can be disordered, uncertain, and dry. But John proclaims, even there, the path can be prepared. Even there, God can come.

Advent invites us to take that seriously. What in us resists transformation? What needs to be cleared away? Is it resentment, pride, fear, or distraction? These are crooked roads. And yet we are not alone in the work of making them straight. God’s grace meets us even in the dry, disordered places. John’s voice is a reminder that even in wild and uncertain places, the way of the Lord can be made ready.

So, this Advent, let us ask the harder questions. Let us prepare not only our homes, but our hearts. Let us become people of welcome, humility, repentance, and courage. Let us make room for Jesus, especially in the wilderness places of our own souls.
