Today’s Scripture Readings
John 1:47‐51
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

A God who Knows and Loves us
‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’ (John 1:51)
Today’s scripture beautifully illustrates the profound connection we can forge with Jesus, who recognises Nathanael’s integrity and character ‘an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.’ This revelation highlights His intimate knowledge of us. He knows us better than we know ourselves and still loves each of us unconditionally. The good news is that He is not a harsh authoritarian, but a loving God.
Nathanael, in turn, realised this knowledge was beyond normal human reasoning, confirming he was indeed speaking to the Son of God. In a powerful moment, the devout Jew Nathanael, declared astounding words: ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.’
On this feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, we are reminded that heaven is not far. ‘You will see heaven opened.’ The Archangels show us that God is deeply involved in our world: Michael defends us in spiritual battle; Gabriel brings us divine messages and Raphael delivers healing. They serve as signs of God’s presence, power and care in our lives.
Jesus’ encouraging response to us echoes his words to Nathanael, “You will see greater things than these.” He inspires each of us to trust in His divine plan.
May we like, Nathanael, place our hope and trust in Jesus and allow his gaze to pierce our hearts. Amen.
