John 3:16-18

NRSV
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Reflection

A God who dares to become human

"God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." (John 3:17)

The Trinity is not an accidental reality. God didn’t send his Son because humanity happened to be really unruly. From the beginning, the intention was for the Son to draw us into divine life through the Incarnation and then through His defeat of death and sin, show us the true nature of God the Father in the Holy Trinity. We are called and drawn into this Trinitarian Love through Jesus. The Triune God is, in their very nature, love overflowing in three Persons – and has been so from before time began. Through baptism, we are dead to sin and come into life with God.

So, how do we participate in this Love? We must surrender ourselves into it. It is the key to fullness of life with God – a life not merely comprised of managed failures, distance and guilt, addictive habits, temporary highs and crushing lows. The Trinity makes real a life lived from our Imago Dei (made in the image of God – Genesis 1:27), a lifelong journey toward God where we are incorporated into this Trinitarian Union, this Holy overflow of love from the beginning of time. What a scandal!

To live out of that reality is where our deepest calling is – to embody what happened at your baptism and start to let go of all the pieces of ourselves that are not of God, so that our whole life might reflect the radical, eternal, overflowing love of the Holy Trinity.

God you are Love: Father Son and Holy Spirit. May my life be marked by an unceasing orientation toward You and Your Goodness. Help me to glimpse and grasp the mystery of your union with me. Amen
